Informations

Bergamo is a city in the alpine Lombardy region of northern Italy, approximately 40 km (25 mi) northeast of Milan, The Bergamo Alps begin immediately north of the city.

With a population of around 120,000, Bergamo is the fourth-largest city in Lombardy. The metropolitan area of Bergamo extends beyond the administrative city limits, spanning over a densely urbanized area with slightly less than 500,000 inhabitants.

We decided to spend Christmas 2021 in Italy, Bergamo with my husband’s family. So we drove from Munich by car and drove almost 6 hours until we reached our destination. Honestly when we left the small town where my husband’s relatives live, to go to Bergamo, we were very pleased with the wonderful Christmas decorations that were everywhere in the city.

We were glad that we chose this time of year to visit this beautiful city. If you will visit the city by car, be careful at the ZTL zones! The fees are quite high and is better to be informed about them.

More informations you can find here!

If you have already read our travel guide for the cities of Verona and Milan, you already know that there are areas in the city where you are allowed to enter by car between certain hours. If you violate this rule the fines are quite high. So please be careful with the ZTL areas! You can find more informations about these areas by searching on google about them.

Things to do

Bergamo Cathedral

We started by visiting the city center and our first tourist attraction was Capella Colleoni. It is also known by other names, such as Santa Maria Maggiore or Bergamo Cathedral.

The Cappella Colleoni in the old town of Bergamo is a burial chapel commissioned by the condottiere Bartolomeo Colleoni in 1471. The elaborately designed chapel is an outstanding testimony to the Lombard architecture of the 15th century. It contains the tombs of the mercenary leader Colleoni (1400–1475) and his daughter Medea, who died in 1470 at the age of twelve.

The Venetian Walls

We wanted to visit the old town but before that, we had to visit one more attraction :The Venetian Walls.

The Venetian walls of Bergamo are an imposing architectural construction dating back to the sixteenth century, well preserved as they have not suffered any war events over the centuries. This enclosure consists of 14 bulwarks, 2 floors, 32 sentry boxes (of which only one has come down to us), 100 openings for guns, two powder cases, and 4 doors.

Porta San Giacomo

Porta San Giacomo is perhaps the most beautiful of the access gates from the Venetian walls to the upper city of Bergamo, it was built in 1592, it is the only one in pinkish white marble from the Zandobbio quarry in Val Cavallina.

Immediately after visiting these beautiful attractions of Bergamo, we set off for the old town. And here we want to offer you a tip: Be very careful on the streets when you go to the old town, because there are certain hours when you are allowed to enter by car, and if you’re not careful the fines are quite high.

So now we will delight you with the second part of our trip to Bergamo: The Old Town.

After we parked the car and paid the fee of 1 euro per hour, we set off for the wonderful Old Town. These are some pictures we have taken on the way:

Old Square

After this wonderful walk we finally reached the Old Square-Piazza Vecchia.

It was the seat for many centuries of the political and civil activity of the city. The square was connected by the portico of the Palazzo della Ragione with the Sancti Vincentii platea, which became the Piazza del Duomo.

After such a beautiful walk we decided to stop at a beautiful cafe where we enjoyed the italian coffee and their nutella croissants.

Porta Nuova

The Porta Nuova is a monumental city gate in Bergamo. It was built in neoclassical style in 1837 for the arrival of Ferdinand I of Austria, based on an earlier project by the architect Giuseppe Cusi in 1828, which Ferdinando Crivelli helped to realize. The construction of the Propylaea and Viale Papa Giovanni, which connects the Bergamo railway station, built by the Austrian Southern Railway Company, with the funicular to the upper part of the city, forced the demolition of the monastery and the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie.

Trucca Park

The biggest park in Bergamo Town is a must park to visit if you enjoy the peace, calm and beautiful view of the park in the heart of Bergamo. You can either do walking, Running or just grab a sandwich and a beer to have picnic with friends or family or just bring your latest novel to read with all peace you need. The park is absolute clean and tidy and you can find the trash bin easily to keep this park remarkable clean!

On our way back to the car, we could see the city from above, but unfortunately it was foggy and we couldn’t see everything very clearly.

  • The earlier you book your train or bus tickets, the cheaper the seats! By booking directly with the railroad, you can also take advantage of special promotions.
  • Most of the larger tourist attractions and museums in Italy offer free entrance days throughout the week or at least once a month. Do some research ahead of time and maybe you can synch up your trip to a few of the free days.

  • Avoid the Tourist Menu- Instead, go to a place where you would probably spot locals or simply a Pizzeria where pizza ranges from EUR 5-10! You can also go for Pizza al taglio (pizza by the slice) and combine it with a bottle of beer from the supermarket.
  • In bigger cities such as Rome, water is in abundance and free because of the many fountains in the city. This helps you save the money for that extra bottle(s) of water. Just remember to keep an empty bottled water and make use of the free fountain water. The tap water in Italy is safe to drink too but don’t rely on it.

Getting Around

It is very easy to travel in or from Italy. Italy has a well-developed public transport system that consists of railways, metros, buses, ferries, airplanes and other means of transport. You can use the train to travel in the country and outside. Italian railway system is extensive and well connected with the European railway system. The regional network is more extensive in the north, than in the South. An important high-speed train line connects the South with the North of the country going from Naples to Milan and Turin.

In the majority of larger Italian cities, public transportation is available, in the cities like Naples or Milan you have an extensive network of buses connecting all suburbs to the center of the town.

Buying tickets for public transportation varies from city to city, sometimes they are bought at dedicated sales points and other times they are bought on the bus for example, so be sure to check which options are available for the city you are travelling in:

Tourist Tickets (24 hour and 72 hour) – Lots of cities’ bus companies will offer a friendly price for tourists. These tickets usually have a validity from 24 to 72 hours, so tourists can have unlimited rides within that time period.  Again, the length of the routes usually affect the price of these tickets. The further you go, the higher the price.

public transport italy

A “carnet” is a collection of tickets you buy at one time. For example, if you have to take the bus back and forth for 5 days, you would want to buy a “carnet 10 corse” and then you’d specify how many zones your route covers so the seller knows what ticket to give you.  Every time you get on the bus, you validate that ticket and the machine will punch out one of the numbers to show you have used that ride.  This can be a ticket option for tourists, especially those staying a bit longer in certain areas.

One-way tickets are most commonly sold for city buses. They have a period of time that they are valid for use, usually 90 minutes, so within the 90 minutes from validating your ticket on the bus, you can use that ticket for as many rides as you want. However, if it’s after 90 minutes (or whatever time period your ticket says) from the ticket’s validation, you’ll need a new ticket to take the bus. Read on to find out why validating your ticket is so important! Roundtrip ticket Regional buses usually sell roundtrip tickets and it’s pretty straightforward – keep your ticket for the return trip!
